Works in progress

Hi all,

Hmmm. I think it’s waaaay past time for some updates to reassure readers I’m not slacking :)

First up, my paranormal young adult manuscript, Liminal, recently finalled in the Romance Writers of New Zealand Strictly Single contest (for single-title length manuscript) —  WOOHOO!

Huge congratulations to the other three finallists, Ellie Huse, Christine Taylor and Ainslie Paton — I’m totally stoked to be a finalist alongside them :)

Now we all play the waiting game and hope our first few chapters leave the judging agent and editor dying to read more. Please wish me luck! I’m going to need it!

And for those of you who’ve asked for a 4th Crystal Warriors book, another Lightning Rider Elementals book, or a 3rd Freaks book, and who are wondering what’s taking so long….

I’m feeding my muse by rewriting a fantasy romance trilogy I first wrote a few years back. All three manuscripts did very well in the RWNZ Clendon Award, with book 1 finalling in 2004, and books 2 & 3 being highly commended in 2004 and 2008 respectively. (And I just checked back and discovered book 1 was a Strictly Single finalist in 2005, too — I’d completely forgotten about that: Bonus!) So yeah, I’d say based on some modest contest success (and one Clendon Reader who gave books 1 and 2 perfect scores)  the stories definitely had merit but, as with most new writers, there was a lot of “craft” yet to learn. Which is why The Dayamari Seers trilogy has been languishing on my hard-drive until now.

I gotta say that after finishing the rewrite of the 1st story, I love it as much as I did when I first wrote it :) And I can’t wait to see what DH comes up with for the cover(s).

At this stage I’m still playing round with titles, so nothing’s set in stone. But I’m thinking maybe:

  • Book 1: Seer’s Hope
  • Book 2: Seer’s Promise,  or, Seer’s Vow
  • Book 3: Seer’s Choice, or, Seer’s Mate

Feel free to wade in with your preferences :) And you might like to watch this space: cover reveals and blurbs coming soon!

I’m now about five chapters in with the rewrite of book 2, and hope to get the rewrite of book 3 finished by Christmas. My plan at this stage is to release all three books simultaneously, and also to make the entire trilogy available as a heavily discounted eBook bundle via my website. Once I’ve got that underway, as promised my next project is a 4th book in the Crystal Warriors series. And after that a 3rd Freaks book. Didn’t I order a clone a while back?

  1. I’ll be really interested to see how different the seer trilogy is now that you’ve reworked it. It was fantastic then!

    • Aw, thank you Rowena! It is essentially is the same story–just much tighter, pacier and more strict on the POV. I did head-hop quite a bit when I first started writing all those years ago; didn’t really start to be more disciplined about it until I started writing in 1st person *wry grin*
