Freaks updates

Hi all,

Sorry I’ve been an absentee blogger for the past few weeks. I have The Best Excuse In The World: finishing the first draft of FREAKS IN THE CITY, the sequel to Freaks of Greenfield High *VBG* It’s with beta readers as I’m writing this, and I hope to have it ready to publish in the next month… depending on DH’s willingness to put aside his own work to create me another cover, and convert my document of course. (Hint! Hint!)

While I’m on the subject of Freaks in the City — a huge thank you to everyone who waded in on Facebook and threw title suggestions at me. Mine were okay, but yours really rocked!

Trish came up with “Freaksville”, which I loved. And then Jonathan almost nailed it with “Freak in the City”. All I had to do was add another “s” and I had a title that perfectly captured the “flavor” of this story–such a relief. Thank you, Jonathan!

I’ll post the cover on the website as soon as it’s done, but in the meantime, here’s the stock photo I’ve purchased that I’m hoping DH will be able to use for Jay:

Freaks2, stock photo

Yes, it is the same model that was used for the cover of Freaks of Greenfield High, except her hair color is different… which, believe it or not, perfectly fit the final scene, and perfectly portrays Jay as she is in Freaks in the City. I love it when that happens with stock photos. *g*

Before I forget: some more news about the TV option for Freaks of Greenfield High.

A few weeks back my wonderful contact at Cream Drama revealed  they’ve hired Damian Kindler to consult on the story treatment and help whip it into shape before they pitch the project. Damian is the writer and creator of the Sci-Fi series Sanctuary (which I spotted at JB Hi Fi in Palmerston North while on holiday, and snatched from the shelf with much accompanying squeeing, as you might imagine!) He has also worked on a number of episodes of Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis, and is shortly to begin working on a TV adaptation of Universal Soldier.

So how exciting is that?

Pretty. Darned. Exciting. Fingers crossed Freaks wows them all and this project moves forward to the next stage.

Oh, and don’t forget if you’re eager for sneak peeks of Freaks in the City, I’m posting manuscript snippets over on my Freaks of Greenfield High Facebook page.

In the meantime, while I wait for my beta readers to get back to me, I’m working on an old fantasy trilogy and giving it a makeover. Will keep you posted.

  1. Good on you Maree. Can’t wait to read Freaks In The City. So very exciting about the TV/Movie Treatment writer also. You must be so stoked. I know I am for you cause I know how hard you’ve worked for this.

    • Thanks so much, Rowena. And yep, I’m pretty stoked all right. But you and I both know how easily these sort of chances fall over and go nowhere. So I’m trying not to get too excited.
