December is serials and sagas

Happy New Year, Everyone!

Just had to say that before I forgot :) And I hope 2014 is a stellar year for you all, and that at least one of your wishes, hopes, or dreams is fulfilled in the best possible way.

SagaVol1This month I’ve been re-reading a couple of series from my keeper shelves. This came about because I periodically peruse my shelves to check out which books I needed to buy to complete a series — in this case, the Morganville Vampires, a fabulous and compelling YA series by Rachel Caine. And, thanks to a PayPal credit balance and free shipping courtesy of The Book Depository, I got all caught up with the series. (And if it wouldn’t scare y’all into therapy, I’d post a photo of me rubbing my little hands in anticipatory glee.)

Of course I decided to re-read the books I already owned while waiting for the books I’d purchased to complete the series to ship… as you do. (Or I do, anyway, coz I’m one of those weirdos who loves to re-read books multiple times.) And of course I completely forgot about the biggest problem with ordering six books in a series all at once from a company that ships as each book becomes available. Yep, I had just finished Kiss of Death when two book parcels arrived in the mailbox. Yay!  Except…. Wahhhh! Turned out neither of the two books that just arrived are the next book in the series. And No Freaking Way (!) am I reading them out of order. Because that would be, like, SO WRONG on so many levels.

Guess glomming the rest of the series will have to wait a wee bit. But I can’t be too sad, because I have been hoping for Nalini Singh’s Heart of Obsidian to read over the Christmas break, and it arrived earlier this week. Woohoo! Can’t wait to dive in :) Nalini’s books are a sure thing.

So on to December’s book list. ZOMG, if you like graphic novels/comics of the Romeo and Juliet meets kinda x-rated Star Trek persuasion, then you HAVE to check out Saga Volumes 1 & 2 by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples. (Linking to Amazon here, because there’s a metric ton of reviews to peruse and you can treat yourself with the Look Inside function to check if it’s your thing.) I understand these are available as individual episodes but I opted for the volume sets containing multiple episodes, and they are something else… in a really really good way. DD, DS and I loved them to bits. And we’ve decided our next pet simply has to be a Lying Cat. Alas, one can’t purchase them from Amazon yet, but we live in hope. Hanging out for Volume 3.

And I thoroughly enjoyed The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion, too. If I had to sum it up in one sentence? A fascinating, funny, and poignant romance about an autistic hero bumbling his way toward a Happy Ever After. (Click here to read the Smart Bitches review that made me seek out this book.)
