One of our RWNZ members, the lovely Natalie Anderson, has just been interviewed by the Timaru Herald (her local newspaper). That in itself isn’t unusual; journalists often like to interview local authors about their careers and for the most part, us romance writers are a pretty friendly easy-going bunch so we’re fair game!
What makes this particular interview special is that Natalie writes for Harlequin Presents and she was interviewed because her book Ruthless Boss, Royal Mistress placed 108th in the USA Today list based on the top 150 sales in the week to January 3. And if that’s not enough to get you excited, then consider this: Natalie’s book is listed with books by big-name authors such as Stephen King and J.K. Rowling.
Given that many people look down upon category romance — calling it “formulaic”, or dusting off that sadly inaccurate and woefully overused term “bodice ripper” — IMHO this is a huge coup. I won’t bore you with the quite remarkable sales statistics for romance because you can read all about it on the RWA National website’s Press Releases page, but suffice it to say that even in the toughest of economic climates, romance readers vote with their wallets. They know what they like, and they read a heckuva lot of what they like. And in Natalie’s case, they’ve shown what they like in no uncertain terms, hence Ruthless Boss, Royal Mistress making the coveted USA Today list.
Which means that I can stick out my tongue and say: Take that you romance book nay-sayers!
Excellent way to kick off 2010, don’t you think? And let’s hope we see many more romances on future Lists.
