Building Magic with Lilly Cain!

If you run the cursor over the NEWS tab of my website, it says that this category includes “the occasional interview with someone famous!”  So I reckon it must be high time I quit yarping on about my writing and interviewed another author *VBG*

And I’m very excited to have fellow Red Sage author, the lovely Lilly Cain, as my guest today.  Lilly’s celebrating a new…. But I’m not gonna spoil it for you ;-) Enjoy!

All Hail Halloween…and Buffy the Vampire Slayer

By Lilly Cain

Thank you for having me here, Maree!

I’m so happy to be celebrating the release of my third book, my novella Building Magic from Red Sage Publishing. Building Magic is the first book I ever signed a contract for, although it is the third I’ve released. Publishing is funny like that. Let me tell you how I started to write with the idea of being published.

It had been years since I wrote anything. Really, seriously, years. Not since my final writing course in University. I enjoyed reading, but I have to admit I’d even stopped doing that for some time. I still enjoyed books, especially fantasy and romance, but I wasn’t dying to read the next book from anyone. And then came Buffy.

The new TV season had just started. There was a crispness to the air and I was happy to snuggle in for the evening and watch something totally different. Something spooky, something with…wait for it…bite. LOL. I love Halloween and the fun part of the paranormal genre. Buffy gave me that – a dose of spooky and good dose of fun. I enjoyed it so much I wanted more. So I went looking for it in books. And while I found some, I didn’t find enough. So I decided to write my own paranormal stories. The first book I released was actually a vampire book through Red Sage – Dark Harmony.

Since then the paranormal trend has flourished, driven, I think, by more popular paranormal TV shows and movies. Vampires, witches, shapeshifters abound. And I love it! I have lots of great books to read and lots of freedom to write about the kind of stories I enjoy! Building Magic is in that line.

Here’s the back cover:

BUILDING MAGIC: When architecture student and summertime welder Tina Moreland develops a reputation as a peeping Tom, it isn’t the first time she’s been teased for being different. Catching a glimpse of the man of her dreams is worth the aggravation. But when she witnesses him doing something stranger than stripping in his hightower office, it’s enough to make her forget that when working unharnessed on the fifth floor, the first step is a long way down.

Working in the human world leaves Devin Ken’Draga frustrated and exhausted. Things aren’t going well. Devin is the Kenta – prime dragon – in a world not far from earth, only a magical breath of flame away. It is a world that is having problems, and he is expected to solve them. The question is how. Civil war has shattered his land and destroyed his home. He can’t come up with an Answer, and the Elders can only tell him he will find what he needs on Earth.

Devin doesn’t have time to rescue a damsel in distress. But since she is literally falling at his feet, he can’t help but to save Tina. Bringing her home wasn’t part of the plan, but once they fall through the magical portal together, there is no going back. It is only when he spreads his wings in his true dragon form that Devin realizes something he hadn’t anticipated – the woman is a virgin, a temptation no dragon can resist.

So when the weather cools and Halloween is right around the corner, what kind of story do you reach for? Paranormal? Fantasy? Shapeshifter? Vampire?

I love anything with the word magic in it. That and mystical. I’m drawn to them. It’s like…magic LOL

    • Maree says:

Me, too, Jenn! And there’s something about dragons, too. Whether they’re dragon-shifters or ‘normal’ dragons, I just love me a story about these mythical magical mystical creatures. Sigh….

Thanks for having me here Maree! I love the cover too, it really had the right tone for the romance and the hint of the dragons inside of the story. :)

And I can’t help but love dragons Jenn, I have been dying to write more of this series! Thanks for stopping in!

Oooooooooh Lilly! Were you a finalist in Chasing the Dream? I read that opener! Great job! I was a finalist as well, with a story that unfortunately, I haven’t had time to work on since. A missed opportunity for me, but I see you kept going on yours. Congrats! Oh I have to go read the excerpt right now. Good luck!

  4. Lilly Cain says:

    Hey Carly!

I actually placed 3rd with Building Magic in that contest, but it really taught me a lesson about openers and I would recommend it for that if nothing else. But the truth is, it is an awesome contest because of the number of editors and agents who see the finalists!

  5. I love paranormal stories, although I confess to not being a Buffy fan (for some reason I used to confuse her with Sabrina the teenage witch–mega brain fail on my part).

But a dragon? “Building Magic” sounds wonderful.

    • Jenny,
I remember the Sabrina series — I used to quite enjoy that one because it was very light and didn’t take itself seriously *VBG* And dragons….. aren’t they wonderful creatures? I love that Lilly’s written a dragon hero. What more could a girl ask for?
